This is a simple descant shawm I developed which acquired a slightly confusing a name.
The bore is conical, with a bright tone that is quite loud. It is ideal for whistle players who are struggling to make themselves heard in a band or pub session. The reed, a modified Highland bagpipe reed, is enclosed in a wooden cap which protects it from accidental damage. It is played like a whistle, with open fingering. There is no thumb hole and the bottom little finger hole is a semi-tone. With careful scraping and adjusting of the reed there are possibilities or over-blowing into the upper octave and various semi-tones can be acheived by using forked fingerings and slightly adjusted wind pressure.
The Border Horn is made of apple wood and is available in D or C. It can also be made with a large flared bell which gives it a louder, broader sound.
